Biography

Dr. Yinan Wang serves as the tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received the Ph.D. degree in the Grado Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech under the supervison of Dr. Xiaowei Yue. His research interest lies in developing systematic engineering-driven machine learning methodologies with applications to advanced manufacturing.

  • Aug. 2026: Welcome Alexander Sapronov, who joins our group as a new Ph.D. student!
  • July 2026: Our group received an NSF CSSI (Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation) Elements award for the collaborative project Data-Agent: Agentic AI for Autonomous Data Quality Evaluation, Curation, and Task-Aware Dataset Design for Vision-Based Industrial Inspection, in collaboration with Dr. Shancong Mou and Dr. Zirui Liu at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Wang serves as the RPI PI. We appreciate the support from NSF!
  • July 2026: Our group received a grant from the RPI Teaching and Learning Collaboratory for the project AI-Driven Scenario-Based Simulation for Communication Skills Training in Semiconductor Manufacturing, with Dr. Wang as PI and Dr. Helen Zhou and Dr. Muhsin Celik as Co-PIs.
  • June 2026: Dr. Wang started to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Quality & Reliability Technical Committee (TC) of the ASME Manufacturing Engineering Division (MED).
  • June 2026: Ph.D. student Jiayu Liu presented our work Quantum Bayesian Optimization for Quality Improvement in Fuselage Assembly at ASME MSEC 2026 at Penn State University!
  • May 2026: Dr. Wang will serve as a Board Director of the IISE Quality Control and Reliability Engineering (QCRE) Division (2026–2028).
  • May 2026: Ph.D. students Jiayu Liu and Junfeng Wu presented their research works at the IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2026 in Arlington, VA!
  • May 2026: Ph.D. student Junfeng Wu gave a talk on Hardware-aware Finetuning for Efficient Deployment of LLM on Heterogeneous Computing Hardware at the IBM-RPI FCRC Seminar Series.
  • March 2026: Dr. Wang gave an invited talk, Data-centric Modeling and Optimization for Complex Physical Systems, at the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Rutgers University.
  • Jan. 2026: Welcome Miaomiao Feng, who joins our group as a new Ph.D. student!
  • Jan. 2026: Dr. Wang was selected as an RPI-BNL Visiting Faculty Fellow for 2026.
  • Nov. 2025: Our group received the IBM-RPI Future of Computing Research Collaboration (FCRC) Grant. Congratulations!

  • Sep. 2025: Our group is part of the DOE project Toward Higher Brightness and Polarization of Hadron Beams: Digital-Twin-based Control of BNL’s Hadron Accelerator Chain, led by Dr. Georg Hoffstaetter (PI), with Dr. Wang serving as Co-PI. We appreciate the support from DOE!
